Description:

Winner of the Leonard Bernstein Prize in 2006, American cellist Alisa Weilerstein has been dubbed as " ... arguably Yo-Yo Ma's heiress apparent as sovereign of the American cello" by New York magazine. She joins forces with Toronto Symphony Music Director Peter Oundjian for a capstone of the cello repertoire, Dvorak's Concerto in B minor, written during his American visit under the inspiration of a concerto by Broadway tunesmith Victor Herbert. Bookending it is Mozart's bubbling, enigmatic Magic Flute Overture and Nielsen's roiling Fifth Symphony, written in the aftermath of World War I and declared by musicologist Deryck Cooke as "the greatest 20th-century symphony."
