Double bassist Gabriel Polinsky withdraws from concert due to illness
(Philadelphia, September 26, 2019)—Double bassist Gabriel Polinsky, winner of the senior division of The Philadelphia Orchestra’s 2019 Albert M. Greenfield Student Competition, has withdrawn from the Orchestra’s October 3 Free College Concert due to illness. Valerie Coleman’s Umoja replaces Tubin’s Double Bass Concerto. The remainder of the program—Brahms’s Symphony No. 2—is unchanged.
Coleman’s Umoja was enthusiastically received following its world premiere by The Philadelphia Orchestra and Music Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin on September 19, 2019. Originally written for women’s choir, then arranged for several chamber configurations, including woodwind quintet, and now reworked for full orchestra, Umoja—meaning unity in Swahili—draws from Afro-Cuban, jazz, and classical genres.
