(Philadelphia, March 26, 2020)—To maintain and enrich our vital connection to audiences at home and around the world, Music Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin and The Philadelphia Orchestra will offer new ways to engage virtually with the music and musicians of the Orchestra. Through three specific endeavors—WATCH, LISTEN, LEARN—the Virtual Philadelphia Orchestra will fulfill its ongoing commitment to bring music, in video and audio forms, as well as interactive education and enrichment, to audiences. Content will be available at www.philorch.org/virtual. The Virtual Philadelphia Orchestra is generously funded, in part, by the William Penn Foundation. LEARN initiatives of the Virtual Philadelphia Orchestra are supported by Wells Fargo.

Audiences can watch both past and previously unreleased Philadelphia Orchestra performances every Thursday night at 8 PM ET, beginning Thursday, March 26, with Nézet-Séguin: Haydn to Mahler. Performed on October 31, 2010, this historic program was Nézet-Séguin’s first as music director designate.

LISTEN
Every Friday and Saturday night at 8 PM ET, audiences are invited to listen to previously unreleased audio of Philadelphia Orchestra concerts via the Orchestra’s Listen On Demand platform. On Friday, March 27, hear Nézet-Séguin and the Orchestra’s performance of Mahler’s Symphony No. 3 from May 18–21, 2017. On Saturday, March 28, hear Nézet-Séguin lead Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 9 with Daniil Trifonov, the Philadelphia Orchestra premiere of Mason Bates’s Alternative Energy, excerpts from Beethoven’s Creatures of Prometheus, and Liszt’s Prometheus, performed April 6–9, 2017.

In addition to regularly scheduled Sunday (1 PM ET) and Monday (7 PM ET) programs, broadcast partner WRTI-FM will add an additional weekly Philadelphia Orchestra program to be broadcast Thursdays (7 PM ET on HD-2) and Fridays (1 PM on FM) until June 2020. LEARN
Participants of all ages will have the opportunity to learn from, and engage with, musicians of the Orchestra through virtual learning opportunities, including panel discussions, master classes, and more. On Tuesday, March 31, at 6 PM ET, Orchestra President and CEO Matías Tarnopolsky will host a panel discussion featuring Principal Bass Harold Robinson and Acting Associate Principal Bass Joseph Conyers on Zoom at www.philorch.org/virtual/learn. Participation is limited to the first 500 registrants.
Due to rapidly evolving developments, and in accordance with the City of Philadelphia’s recommendation that all large gatherings be suspended to limit community transmission of COVID-19, all scheduled Philadelphia Orchestra rehearsals, performances, and events through May 10, 2020, are cancelled.
