Violinist Jeoung-Yin Kim joined The Philadelphia Orchestra at the start of the 2017-18 season and comes from South Korea. She has appeared in some of the world’s most celebrated venues, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Avery Fisher Hall at Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall, the Library of Congress, the Chateau de Fontainebleau, the Frauenkirche in Dresden, the Seoul Arts Center, and the Shanghai Concert Hall. Her live performances have been featured on Classical Folk Music Radio of Chicago and Philadelphia’s WHYY, among others.
As an active chamber musician, Ms. Kim has collaborated with such eminent artists as Ida Kavafian, Carter Brey, Steven Tenenbom, and Raphael Hillyer. She has toured five cities in Korea with the International Sejong Soloists. During her time studying at the Curtis Institute of Music, she toured Asia and performed with Roberto Díaz, Mark Russell Smith, and Marcy Rosen, among others. Ms. Kim has also attended numerous music festivals, including Yellow Barn’s Young Artists Program; the Sarasota Music Festival; the American Conservatory at Fontainebleau in France, where she was accepted on full scholarship during the summers of 2011 and 2013; the Deer Valley Music Festival; the Lake George Music Festival; and the Saito Kinen Festival, where she was the youngest musician ever to participate.
As an orchestral musician, Ms. Kim has played under the baton of renowned conductors including Seiji Ozawa, Simon Rattle, Alan Gilbert, Michael Tilson Thomas, Christoph Eschenbach, Leon Fleisher, Rafael Frühbeck du Burgos, Otto-Werner Mueller, Robert Spano, and Vladimir Jurowski. She has also played with the Artosphere Festival Orchestra during two summer seasons. Ms. Kim was assistant concertmaster of both the Curtis Symphony and the Juilliard Orchestra during her studies. She was also a member of the Harrisburg Symphony, where she served as assistant principal second violin.
Ms. Kim holds a bachelor’s degree from the Curtis Institute of Music, where she was a full scholarship recipient studying with Shmuel Ashkenasi and former Philadelphia Orchestra member Yumi Ninomiya Scott. Ms. Kim earned her master’s degree from the Juilliard School, where she studied with Hyo Kang. Prior to coming to the United States, she studied in Japan with Toyoshima Yasushi and Hiroaki Matsuno; she has also studied with Hirono Oka of The Philadelphia Orchestra.
