Xian Zhang Conductor
Rossini Overture to William Tell
Beethoven Symphony No. 7
Conductor Xian Zhang and the Orchestra ring in the New Year with Beethoven’s joyous Seventh Symphony. Composed during the height of Beethoven’s fame and success, the Symphony No. 7 strikes a celebratory tone to welcome 2022 with hope and a renewed sense of optimism. Its beloved second movement was referred to by one critic at its premiere as “the crown of modern instrumental music.” Plus, delight in Rossini’s sparkling Overture to William Tell.
Please note: This performance originally included Music Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin as conductor. Following a busy fall that marked The Philadelphia Orchestra’s highly anticipated return to live concerts with audiences, Music Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin has withdrawn from the Orchestra’s December 31, 2021, and January 2, 2022, concerts. Conductor Xian Zhang has graciously agreed to lead both concerts.
This performance also originally included Gabriela Lena Frank’s Pachamama Meets an Ode and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 (“Choral”).
