Program Notes
Pianist Evgeny Kissin was born in 1971 in Moscow, and by the age of two was playing by ear and improvising on the family piano. He made his concert debut at age 10, and by the age of 12 had begun his career, performing Chopin’s First and Second concertos with the Moscow State Philharmonic in the Great Hall of the Moscow Conservatory. Kissin made his Western debut in 1987 and has been a favorite of audiences around the world ever since, attracting critical acclaim like this from the Times of London: “All the hallmarks of his genius—and one does not use the word lightly—were on display: the rich, sonorous tone, the dazzling fingerwork and, above all, the inspired fantasy. So compelling is Kissin’s pianism, so fresh his response to even the most familiar phrases, that one hangs on every note.”
